PLYMOUTH – Local golf enthusiasts can now get the treatment of the pros, thanks to Golf Fitness Associates, a new company opened by local physical therapist and golfer Kathy Murphy BS, MSPT.
Called Golf Fitness Associates, the company offers golfers hands on muscle training and physical therapy aimed at improving your golf swing and ultimately lowering your golf score. It's the same concept that happens inside those mobile physical therapy units on the pro tours, only this one, says Murphy, is affordable, convenient and comes to your home.
"All the pros have fitness trainers," said Murphy, who has worked in the physical therapy field for decades. "It only makes sense. The only piece of golf equipment you use every stroke is the same one you cannot buy or replace –your body. You need to take care of it and keep it in shape to make your game work."
Golf Fitness Associates comes to your home or your golf course and meets with you one on one, using two steps to develop an exercise program for your swing and your swing alone.
"People don't like to exercise by nature, but they do like to see their golf improve," said Murphy. "We ask you right off: how long do you want to exercise? Using that, we can create a realistic program for you."
Golf Fitness Associates first evaluates you – testing muscle strength, watching your swing, combining golf knowledge with physiology to figure out how your swing can get better. On your next visit, Golf Fitness Associates puts you through your golf workout, carefully explaining each exercise and why you need to do it.
The results, those that have used the new service say, are phenomenal.
"I've golfed almost all my life and I still felt a difference almost right away," said Barbara Greenhalgh, a many-time Plymouth Country Club champion and competitor in the Women's Golf Association of Massachusetts. "Every golfer can benefit from this."
Murphy agrees.
"You don't have to be a so-called good golfer to need this," she said. "The weekend golfer is perhaps the golfer that needs this most. The golf swing demands a lot of extreme motions that a lot of sports don't require. It's not brute strength but the proper muscle usage. Once you've trained your body to do that, your scores will go down and enjoyment go up."
Murphy, who trained at the BackToGolf Academy, has done evaluations at Duxbury Yacht Club, Waverly Oaks and the Ridge Club, to name a few. She is available by calling (508) 494-6075.
