Bedrock Golf Club, MA

"Bedrock was a complete surprise. For little money, it is a challenging course in a beautiful setting. Also, it's relatively out of the way so golfer traffic is light and waiting times are short." Matt

Blackstone National Golf Club, Sutton, MA

"I play a lot of golf courses thoughout N.E. and I just can't seem to get enough of Blackstone. The staff are always friendly. They are always sending out specials. You get an E-Mail once a week to let you know what they have going on for the week. It is really just a great place to spend the day golfing. No unwanted preasure. If you have not played it yet, you have got to try it. They should pay me for such a great review!!!" HW

Blissful Meadows Golf Course, Uxbridge, MA

"For what they charge for a round of golf w/cart ($52), I was appauled with the shape of the course and the service. It had rained over night and it was up to us to dry off the carts while emloyees stood around and chating by the practice green. When we asked them for a towel we were told to check inside the clubhouse for one. The pin placements were all on the sides of hills, with uphill putts rolling backwards, even when the greens were still wet. If they mention they are a spikeless facility they do not inforce it, a group earlier tore up the greens right by the cup with metal spike marks. Needless to say I will not be visiting Blissful Meadows anytime soon." RP

Butternut Farm Golf Course, Stow, MA

"Course was overbooked as play was slow and backed up on a number of holes but worst of all was the poor attitude of the crabby old-fogy that took our greens fees at the cash register. It was a shame because the course was beautiful!" BC

Cyprian Keyes Golf Club, Boylston, MA

"I've played Cyprian Keyes golf club several times, and I have not tired of it. Usually the back nine outshines the front nine in aesthetics this course is a beauty from the 1st to the last tee. Fairways and greens are most often in very nice shape and the architectural layout of the course is well conceived for the terrain it is built on. A course that really uses the natural terrain well. The course can eat you up though if you are not hitting it straight which can always detract from the experience so if you aren't a fan of rather difficult courses, you may want to avoid this one. But if the beauty of nice course is what gets you out there, then by all means, play this one. Whether I play well or not, I always seem to enjoy the course. On top of that, the restaurant has a fantastic menu and atmosphere and the customer service is always top notch! This course always seems to offer alot of great promotional offers so it's definitely worth looking into. " EB

"Cyprian Keyes is an all around excellent golf facility. Even though the course maybe a little difficult, the condition of the course is always and I mean always in excellent shape. The staff is very cordial and the golf carts are always clean and the crew very helpful. The restaurant has excellent food and the staff is great. The course has a private feel even though it is public." J

Hillside Country Club, Rehoboth, MA

"What a hole! (excuse the pun). I am extremely surprised this course is semi-private. You'd have to pay ME to belong to this place. First off, they have no clubhouse - it "burned" under somewhat suspicious circumstances. The fairways are a mix of crabgrass and hard-pan. It's also obvious that they are stretching calling this an 18-hole course. More like a converted 9-hole, which makes for a crowded and narrow course. ALso a shooting gallery. We played recently and out of nowhere a ball knocks my partner to the ground. Hit him right in the temple and nearly killed him! And we couldn't even find the shady culprit! Overall not a good golfing experience. Tips for course - bring your OLD clubs and protective headgear!" M

Hyannis GC, Hyannis, MA

"It's the Pebble Beach of the east. The venue is absolutely amazing. Always ranked the best on Cape Cod and top 10 in Massachusetts." ME

Kettle Brook Country Club, Paxton, MA

"Can't say enough about the shape of the course as well as the staff. We had a great day of golf on this challenging, yet fair course in great condition. The starter was fantastic and set the tone for an extremely enjoyable, scenic 4 1/2 hour trek through Paxton's rolling hills. Highly recommended." RR

Maplegate Country Club, Bellingham, MA

"We provided them with a large group of players this past week only to get treted very poorly again. I and many other players in the area will NEVER RETURN to Maplegate to play under the current ownership. They treat people as bad as they can with zero manners.
On the morning we played my foursome shot in the 80's in 4 hrs 30 mins and still got "bullied" by the owner/ranger. A similar situation occurred about three years ago while playing at Maplegate. I should have learned and stayed away for good." MC

"In all my twenty years of playing the great game, I have never encountered so much rudeness from a course marshal as I have at Maplegate. In a totally obnoxious and aggressive tone, he told our group of four that we were holding up the rest of the field (just prior to teeing off the 10th). I then asked him how this could be so when the immediate group behind us had never waited for us to clear. This minor fact did not seem to register with him and the nastiness continued. It is a shame that such a nice course is staffed by someone who seems intent on alienating his customers. We also had another marshal track us for almost the entire round; even though HE was extremely polite and helpful, it was still very annoying. I shall not return. Round played 11/3/00." IW

"I read many comments about Maplegate here. Many had comments about there being too much pressure from the rangers. I have to say that I totally disagree. There were a couple of times that our foursome fell a little behind but we made sure that we caught up as quickly as possible. The rangers were ever present on the course but that only means that they are doing their job. I wish that more courses had rangers who were attentive to what they are supposed to be doing. On most of the courses that I've played, that have rangers, you hardly ever see the ranger. I think more courses need to take a lesson from Maplegate and keep play moving. We had a very enjoyable 4 hour round at a challenging, very well maintained golf course and we all look forward to returning many times.
Thank You Maplegate" Rick

"Course is tough, have to be in fairway. Very, very few recovery shots. To play blues, you have to be long and straight. Good test of golf." BD

Maplewood Golf Course, Lunenburg, MA

"Since retiring I have played Maplewood for the past two years and have never had any problems while playing there.
The owner Joe is not much of a talker, but he has always treated me personally, very well. Maybe his lack of initiating conversation is the reason people feel that he is unfriendly. As for his wife I have heard from some players that they have had confrontations with her, but again personally, I have never had anything but pleasant conversation with the woman.
The course isn't a championship quality golf course, but it is only a nine hole public course. The owner does a good job of keeping the course very playable.
It is one of the only courses in the area where you can walk on without a tee time and get a quick 9 or 18 holes. I have walked on and played 18 holes even on weekends and holidays. Mondays and Thursdays are senior days and you can play 18 holes for under $20.
For the money it isn't bad. I have paid higher greens fees for worse conditions and had to make a tee time to do so." CC

"The owners are two of the most miserable, rude, unfriendly people I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. How they ever got into a business that requires them to interact with the public I'll never know. They almost seem pissed-off by your very presence at the counter. And god forbid you pay with a credit card! If you call to make a tee time the old XXXXX first reads you off a list of rules!
The fairways are like a cow pasture and the greens are mediocre at best. If wasn't for the fact that it's only a couple of miles away I would never play there again." NT

"The woman at the club house was rude and very miserable. Made what could of been a fun day into a challenge. She was always crabbing about something." DS

"This course was fairly easy with wide fairways and few obstacles. We found the greens to be a bit frustrating. They were either too fast or too slow. The consistancy was not to be found. For an easy course it was enjoyable overall." BB

Mount Hood Golf Course, Melrose, MA

"I took a series of lessons from Tim Lynch and I am delighted at the improvement in my game. I had heard about him through a friend who highly recommended Tim from a day school for adults that he ran last year. The biggest mistake is that it took me two years before I decided to look him up for lessons." MR

New Meadows Golf Course, Topsfield, MA

"New Meadows is so underrated. It is the best public course I have ever played. I did have to wait for one hour, but it was worth it." DS

Red Tail Golf Course, Ayer, MA

"The course charges outragious fees - $70 dollars. The greens are full of sand, you need to take a cart, and you might as well carry your bag as they set the cart path miles away from the fairways. It needs at least 2-3 years before I'll pay and play that course again." RC

"Fantastic layout. No two holes look the same. Don't have to see many groups on the rest of the course. Very playable if you have any idea where the ball is going. Greens sloping but very fair to putt. Price has gone up. Not sure if it's worth the price at $78." MW

Rowley Country Club, Rowley, MA

"I took some lessons from the teaching pro Tim Lynch last year. I can't believe how much a difference it has made in my game. Lessons are really worth taking from the right teaching pro." GD

"Course is in very good condition. Taking golf lessons from PGA pro Tim Lynch who was recommended by a friend. Great course to improve your game." BP

Shaker Hills GC, Harvard, MA

"One of the poorest courses in terms of pace of play. I played it in July ('03) on a Thursday and it took 6 hrs. to complete the round despite the fact that Rangers were present. They seemed more concerned about enforcing the stupid rule of no carts in fairway than in getting pace of play to speed up. It's a very good course but is over priced considering how many other Brian Silva courses are available to us in Massachusetts. Most of these do not enforce taking carts and then, having to keep them on cart paths." KL

Sheraton Hotel & Colonial GC, MA

"The Colonial has gone straight downhill. The entire course was burnt out in July with no visible signs of trying to keep it watered. The greens and tee boxes were spray painted green (yes, you heard it right). They tout "the Geese are gone", that is because the geese would starve there. In addition they charge top dollar to golf the worst maintained course I have seen this year!" JP

Stow Acres CC, South Course, Stow, MA

"One of the more overrated courses in the area. They have no right charging the fees they do with the condition is in. Greens are terrible. Dead and bumpy with no true roll." MM

Swansea CC, Swansea, MA

"This course was in great shape and perhaps the best value in Southern New England. The 9th and 18th holes are two great holes and the par 3's are bears." HM
